Biography

Osibisa are a pioneering British-Ghanaian-Caribbean Afro-Rock band formed in London in 1969 by four expatriate West African and three Caribbean musicians. Affectionately known as The Beautiful Seven, they forged a bold new sound that blended rock, highlife, native blues, and infectious, high-energy rhythms—cementing their place as trailblazers of the Afro-Rock genre. Their innovative style even earned them the name “the African Santana”.

With a legacy spanning over 55 years, Osibisa have remained a dynamic force in music. Aside from a brief touring hiatus between 1990 and 1993, the band continues to record and perform internationally. Featuring founder member Wendell Richardson (the voice of Osibisa), the band also consists of a new generation from hand-picked talent, keeping the spirit of the original line-up alive.

Osibisa’s music always reached a global audience, featuring in several international films. Notably, their tracks are the soundtarck to the 1973 movie Superfly TNT, the sequel to Curtis Mayfield’s iconic Superfly, as well as in the award-winning 2004 film Boyhood, which garnered Oscars, BAFTAs, and Golden Globes.

Known for timeless anthems like the classic Woyaya, Welcome Home, Fire, Dance the Body Music and the timeless Sunshine Day, Osibisa’s live shows are legendary for turning any venue into a joyful, high-octane celebration.

One thing’s for sure—when Osibisa plays, the party is guaranteed.
